The digital economy has attracted many APEC economies’ attention, and it has been closely connected with people’s daily lives for the time being. As the most important multilateral economic and trade cooperation forum in our region, APEC certainly has to respond to this trend of our time and actively promote the relevant work. The most important and critical achievement would be the “APEC Internet and Digital Economy Roadmap” (AIDER) raised in 2017.
The APEC region was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, Taiwan has been successful in using digital technologies to cope with the pandemic, and Taiwan has continued to play an important role in the digital supply chains. In addition, the government has actively planned to build Taiwan into a hub for the convergence of digital technologies to demonstrate the sound foundation of its digital capability. Therefore, participating in AIDER events for Taiwan is essential.
By participating in AIDER related meetings, the research team has tried to grasp APEC’s dynamics in promoting the development of the digital economy and helping implement AIDER, analyze the context of the participation strategies of APEC economies, and look for favorable timing and topics for Taiwan to take an active part.
The research team has then proposed a number of initiatives aiming at AIDER's specific key focus areas. They are expected to help implement AIDER, reveal Taiwan’s strength in specific industries, promote digital trade, and further pave the way for Taiwan to participate in multilateral integration processes in the future.
